Meet Felix, the adorable black Labrador who resides in the snowy state of Alaska, USA. He has gained quite a following on the social media platform Imgur, where fans eagerly follow his journey and delight in watching the furry pooch grow and thrive. According to his doting owner Jamie, “I’ve been looking after Felix since he was only 11 days old.” Jamie was called in as a rescue worker by the breeder when they noticed that one of their litter’s puppies was struggling to develop due to a serious cleft palate and lip. The little pup was unable to feed properly from her mother and was on the brink of death, but with Jamie’s love and care, Felix pulled through and grew into the happy and healthy dog we know and love today.
This adorable pup wasn’t easy to rescue. “When I found him, he was suffering from aspiration pneumonia and wasn’t expected to make it through the day,” Jamie shares. However, I took him under my care and nursed him back to health for seven weeks, which included feeding him through a tube and helping him battle pneumonia. Despite his rough start, this black lab dog is now 14 months old and doing great!
The exact reason behind cleft lip and palate remains unknown. Jamie suggests that this abnormality can affect both humans and animals due to inadequate nutrition or exposure to certain substances during pregnancy.
Meet Felix, a brave pup who doesn’t let his health issues stop him from having fun and living life to the fullest. This furry friend happens to have some digestive troubles due to his unique anatomy – his intestines are located on the opposite side of his body. Additionally, Felix only has one working eye and his jaws don’t line up quite right. Despite these challenges, Felix has a special look on his face that exudes resilience and determination.
According to Jamie, her pet can only consume canned food due to his teeth mismatch. She occasionally serves him hard food to make him feel included, but he seems to disdain it. Instead, he prefers keeping himself engaged with some other activities.
In the early months of this year, Felix underwent surgery to correct his cleft lip and palate. His owner explained that the pooch had a unilateral cleft palate which affected both the hard and soft palates. Happily, the veterinary surgeon did an excellent job – using Felix’s own tissue to reconstruct his palate issues.
Before undergoing the procedure, Felix faced a challenge in consuming food and drinks regularly. His father had to wash away the food that couldn’t pass through his cleft every time he fed him.
Jamie shared that the patient had developed a neurological tic after his operation, which involves him spinning around and sometimes barking at nothing. This is probably due to his head being dislocated. Currently, they are experimenting with various medications to determine if they can alleviate his condition.
